What Are The Do's And Dont's In Mattress Care?

Mattress care is something that we need to incorporate in our daily chores. We may not notice it or we may take advantage of the fact that we actually use our mattresses for about a third of our entire lives. Cool, isn't it? Well, it is easy to ignore the fact that we only use our mattresses when we sleep but we should not.

It is pretty easy to give ample time taking care of our appliances such as the television, the laptop, even our washing machine and refrigerator, but for some reason, we do not do the same with the mattresses. Well, here's news for you. The mattress is where you retire after a restless day. Doesn't that make your mattress more important than all the other things in your house?

There are a few things you need to remember in taking care of your mattress. These are quite easy actually if you only give actual time for it. Here they are, some basic do's and dont's on how to take care of your mattress.

1. Do buy a mattress cover to protect your mattress from dust

While there's no problem in choosing to regularly dust the top of your mattress (using a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner), you can also save time on doing this by buying a cover for your mattress. Not only will a mattress cover or topper provide you additional comfort and warmth, it will also protect your mattress from wear and tear. A mattress cover can also protect you from dust, dirt and allergens!

A good mattress topper or cover is something that is waterproof. It works best with stains because once you spilled something on the mattress, you will only have to wipe it with a damp cloth. You also have to make sure it is durable and can endure pressure and it should also be comfortable. You would not like to be sleeping on an uncomfortable surface, do you?

The mattress topper or cover that you would choose should be easily removable as well as washable. You may choose to have it regularly in the laundry basket. This way, you can be assured that the mattress you are sleeping on is really clean and safe. Make sure to dry it thoroughly though before replacing it.

2. Don't jump up and down your mattresses

A mattress is a mattress, not a trampoline. This is especially true for kids. Somehow, the softness and bounce of a mattress entices us to jump up and down on it, just to get that, um, adrenaline fix? Anyway, a mattress, no matter how durable it is advertised to be, cannot last long in a household like that. Because it is a mattress.

While most mattresses sag after a while of being used, do not expect this mattress to last even a short time if it is constantly abused. Remember, for you to receive a good service, you must also keep in mind to use it well. If not, you may end up not just with a sagging mattress but a broken frame as well.

3. Do clean it with an upholstery cleaner

A good advice is to always keep ready a bottle of upholstery cleaner in your house. A good upholstery cleaner will remove the spots and stains that mark your mattress. It will also benefit not just your mattresses but your other furniture as well, such as your couch and even your dinner table chairs.

Try setting aside a day to clean your entire mattress. If this has not been cleaned up for quite a while, chances are the stains marking your mattress have already hardened and will not be easy to remove. This may be a rigorous task depending on how dirty your mattress is, but you do not have to do this every now and then. You can do a general cleanup session twice a year or every six months.

Also do this a maintenance. Every time you spill something on or soil your mattress, immediately wipe (or scrub) the stain off using a damp rag and your upholstery cleaner. Aside from an upholstery cleaner, you can also use your own cleaning solution. To make this, just mix water and mild detergent. Baking soda and vinegar are also effective tools in removing stains. Be careful in scrubbing the stain off as it may damage the mattress' fabric.

4. Do not bring food and drinks to your mattress

If you want to make your life easier, take this simple advice and avoid bringing food and drinks to your mattress. Aside from the fact that it may make you look childish, bringing food and drinks will also increase the chances of soiling your mattress.

Crumbs that fall from the food you are eating may be hidden in the folds of the fabric. This may result to breeding of some insects such as ants. Trust me, you would not want ants in your mattress. They may also attract other insects such as bed bugs. Aside from that, you may also spill liquid on your mattress. A damp mattress may produce a musty smell and may also attract insects.

5. Do rotate or flip it every now and then

Try doing this regularly and your mattress will thank you. See, if we regularly sleep on one side of the mattress, chances are that side will sag slightly. Continuing to sleep on this slightly sagging side will lead to an obvious thing, more sagging.

To prevent this, rotate your mattress every now and then. If your mattress is reversible, better, as you can turn or flip it over. This way, all the usable sides of the mattress will be used and no side will sag more than the others. It will also prevent the accumulation of icky sweat and dust on just one area.

However, if you notice that your mattress really is sagging on one side and there seems nothing you can do about it, chances are your mattress is already old. That sagging might be one of the telltale signs that your mattress already needs to be replaced. If that's the case, don't compromise your health and comfort and just buy a new one.
